In Himachal Pradesh, Agriculture being the main occupation of 90% rural population, plays an important role in the economy of the State. It provides direct employment to 70% of main working population. Agriculture and allied sectors accounts for nearly 13.62% of the total State domestic product. 9.44 lac hectare area is under cultivation & average size of holding is about 0.95 hectare. Marginal and small farmers constitute 88.86% of total land holdings having 55.93% of operational area. The medium holdings constitute 10.84% and large holding cover only 0.30%. Due to mountainous terrain, only 10% of the total area is cultivated. Keeping in view of the prevailing conditions, State Government has fixed priorities for increasing the agricultural production and to uplift the economy of the farmers.
