Tillage & Sowing

i. Land Preparation
Wheat is grown in different types of land. Medium loamy land with good drainage is best suitable for its cultivation. After deep ploughing, 1-2 plowings with the local plow is recommended so that the field is well prepared. If wheat is to be cultivated after paddy, then one more plowing should be done. Lumps of soil should be broken as much as possible.

ii. Seed

For Timely Sowing, Seed at the rate 100 Kg/Hectare is sufficient, but in Rainfed Areas, 150 Kg/Hectare seed is suitable for sowing after 20th December.

iii. Sowing Method
Farmers often sow seeds by broadcast method, but this makes weeding difficult and the yield is also reduced. Therefore the line sowing is recommended in Wheat crop following the line to line spacing of 22 cm. and seed should not be sown at the depth of more than 5 cm.

iv. Sowing Time
To get good yield, wheat should be sown at the right time. The recommended sowing time in
different areas of the state is as below:

Unirrigated

(a) Timely sowing
Lower hill areas Last week of October – 15 November Last week of October – 15 November

(b) Late sowing

If sowing is done late then, production is reduced drastically.
