Harvesting & Storage

When the wheat plants turn yellow and the ears dry up, the crop should be harvested. It is the right time to harvest the crop when the grains have 15 to 20 percent moisture. After harvesting, the crop should be dried for 3 to 4 days. Thereafter, wheat can be threshed with modern equipment like tractor driven thresher or oxen.

The wheat grain should be thoroughly cleaned, classified and dried properly in sunlight (for 6-7 days) before storage. If storage is to be done in gunny bags, then only new gunny bags should be used. There should not be moisture near the place where wheat is to be stored. The incidence of pests increases due to excess moisture. Do not store old grains with new grains. Moisture proof equipment’s should be installed in big warehouses, so that moisture does not increase even during rains. Always make a wooden platform for storage in the warehouse, which should be at least 1 feet above the ground. Apart from this, clean the grain transporting vehicle with phenyl etc.

The moisture level in wheat should not be more than 10 to 12 percent during wheat storage. Dry the seed bins thoroughly in the sun prior to storage of grain in them and make sure that the storage bin should be free of all kinds of insects/ pests. Aluminium Phosphide should be kept at the rate of 10 gram sachet per 10 quintal after storage of Wheat grain in seed bins and keep the bin air tight. Due to this, no harmful insects appear in wheat.
