The state’s main crops such as wheat, maize, paddy, and barley are included under the “Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana” (PMFBY) to provide compensation for losses caused by natural disasters such as fire, lightning, drought, dry spells, floods, waterlogging, hailstorms, cyclones, storms, landslides, cloudbursts, pests, and diseases.
Additionally, if a farmer is unable to sow on time due to low rainfall or adverse weather conditions, they are also covered under this insurance. Further, under this scheme, if crops left in the field for drying after harvest are damaged within 14 days due to cyclonic rain, cyclones, hailstorms, or untimely rainfall, the assessment for compensation will be conducted at the field level.
Under PMFBY, the premium rate for farmers is fixed at 2% of the insured sum for the Kharif season and 1.5% for the Rabi season. This scheme is voluntary for both loanee and non-loanee farmers. All loanee farmers are automatically insured by financial institutions. However, if a loanee farmer does not wish to avail of this scheme, they may submit a declaration to the concerned bank at any time during the year, but this declaration must be submitted at least 7 days before the last date for arranging insurance for the respective season.
Additionally, in selected blocks for the Kharif season, crops such as potato, tomato, ginger, pea, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and capsicum are included under the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme. Similarly, for the Rabi season, crops such as garlic, tomato, potato, capsicum, pea, cabbage, and cauliflower are included.
Under this scheme, the hailstorm standard has also been included for notified crops starting from Kharif 2023 season. Under the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme, the premium rate for farmers is capped at 5% of the insured sum. If the premium exceeds 5%, the excess will be borne by the Central and State Governments in a 90:10 ratio.
So far, under these schemes, from Kharif 2016 to Rabi 2024-25, a total of 5,97,230 farmers have been benefited, and ₹131.41 crore has been paid as compensation.
